A friend, a cousin or a neighbor has just moved, and you are invited to see the new place. In many Turkish families a new home is a happy reason for a visit. There is tea on the table, there are good wishes at the door, and guests often bring a small gift. If you are not sure what to bring or what to say, this guide is for you. It starts with the words people use at the door. Then it shares nine gift ideas for the kitchen, the wall and the living room, with links to Roots & Talks designs that fit each one.

What to say at the door

Two short wishes cover most visits. The first is Hayırlı olsun, which means "may it be for the best". People say it when someone has a new home, a new job or a new purchase. For a home, you can say Yeni eviniz hayırlı olsun, which means "may your new home be for the best". The second wish is Güle güle oturun, which means "live in it happily". Say either one with a smile, before you hand over the gift.

A warm wish in English works too. If you would like more everyday sayings, read What These Turkish Sayings Mean: A Guide to the Roots & Talks Designs.

Three simple rules for choosing

  1. Keep it small. A gift for a new home does not need to be large. A thoughtful small item is welcome.
  2. Think of the table. Tea is often the first thing a guest is offered, so gifts for the kitchen and the table fit the moment. Our guide to traditional Turkish gifts also covers sweets, tea glasses and coffee sets.
  3. Add a card. A few handwritten words turn any item into a real gift.

If you do not know the family well, it is safest to skip alcohol.

Gift ideas for the kitchen

1. A tea towel. Every new kitchen needs a few. The Çay Bahane, Muhabbet Şahane tea towel carries a saying that means "tea is the excuse, the chat is the delight". It suits a home where guests are always welcome. The Sana Da tea towel is another choice. Sana da is the friendly reply to a good wish.

2. A coaster set. A set of four coasters is easy to wrap and easy to use. The Çay Bahane, Muhabbet Şahane coaster set is a good fit for a host who serves tea to guests.

3. A mug. A mug is a simple gift for the host, and a few of them make a small set for the family. Look through the mugs collection, or choose the Nazar Değmesin latte mug.

Gift ideas for the wall and the door

4. Wall art. New homes often have bare walls. A poster, a canvas print or a wall tapestry adds color without taking up much room. Browse the posters, the canvas prints and the home decor collection. If you can, ask the family which room still feels empty.

5. A nazar for the door. The nazar boncuğu is a blue glass charm. In Türkiye people hang it in homes, shops and cars, and it is believed to protect against the evil eye. Our short guide, What Is a Nazar Boncuğu?, explains it for kids. The bead also appears in the Nazar Değmesin designs. Think of it as a keepsake, not a promise.

6. A magnet. A magnet is a small gift that goes straight onto the refrigerator. See ornaments and magnets.

Gift ideas for the living room

7. A throw blanket or a pillow. A throw for the sofa is a friendly gift for a family that likes to sit together. Browse blankets and throws. Pillows are in the home decor collection too.

8. A game for the first family night. A deck of cards or a kids' puzzle gets everyone around the table. Try the Nazar Değmesin playing cards or the Nazar Değmesin kids puzzle. You can also browse puzzles and games.

9. A card with your wish. The Nazar Değmesin greeting cards come in a pack of ten. Write your wish in one card, and keep the rest for other occasions.

What to write in the card

A card does not need a long message. Here are four short lines you can borrow:

  • Yeni eviniz hayırlı olsun. May your new home be for the best.
  • Güle güle oturun. Live in it happily.
  • Çay koy, geliyorum. Put the tea on, I'm coming.
  • Welcome home. We cannot wait for our first glass of tea in your new kitchen.

The third line is a friendly way to promise a visit. Pick the one that sounds like you, and sign it with your own name.

If there are children in the home

Many new homes have small children, and a small gift for them is a kind touch. The Blue Bead is an audio story that is free to listen to, so you can share the link in your card. A short plan for the visit

  1. Pick one idea from the kitchen, the wall or the living room.
  2. Write a wish in a card, such as Yeni eviniz hayırlı olsun.
  3. Bring something sweet from a bakery, if you like, and enjoy the tea.

Remember that the gift is only part of the visit. Tea and a good chat matter just as much.
